Woodwork

Woodwork is a practical subject offered to middle school students. The focus of the course is on the design , process and production of products using a variety timber with strong emphasis on ideas, innovation and creativity. Students investigate and select from a range of technologies, materials, systems, components, tools and equipment. Students have ample opportunities to use creativity, innovation and enterprise skills with increasing independence and collaboration and respond to feedback from others. Students evaluate their design processes and solutions to determine improvements for the future. Students establish and apply safety procedures that minimise risk and manage projects with consideration to safety and efficiency.

Building and Construction

The Building and Construction General course is a combination of practical and theory that provides a solid introduction to the Building and Construction Industry. The course encompasses specific skills and applications of many of the trades and professions in the construction industry. The construction industry is one of the largest industries and one of the biggest employers of tradesmen and women in Western Australia across all skills and professions. Students are introduced to a range of skills from basic safe use of various hand and power tools and machines to industry specific practices such as building processes and technologies, which include principles of design, planning and management. All essential skills that contribute to creating the physical environment with a major focus on understanding the needs of the community and environmental sustainability,.

Skills and development of theoretical knowledge may include areas such as;

  • bricklaying and paving
  • welding – electric and gas
  • Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations relating to the use of tools and materials
  • timber & steel construction
