English

Year Seven to Nine

Our Year 7 to 9 English classes are guided by the Australian Curriculum and embraces three learning strands; Language, Literature and Literacy. Our goal is to create learning programs that nurture independent learners, creative and critical thinkers and skilled researchers. We achieve this through lesson content that is engaging and explicit for young learners, and by ensuring that all learning tasks are scaffolded to meet the individual diversity of each unique cohort of students.

To achieve this, we target our classes to meet the social and emotional well-being of each individual student to ensure that each student can progress in their academic achievement in all three strands of English. Our learning tasks incorporate a wide range of strategies which are built around student interest, strengths, personal goals and learning needs. We strive to provide extra literacy support to students through programs such as MacqLit which aims to build on foundational literacy skills to ensure that all of our students are able to access the Australian Curriculum as they progress through their middle years of education.

Students complete a range of activities in the middle years. For example, they read and interpret a range of challenging text fiction texts; compare, analyse and question ideas and information texts; create texts for different purposes and audiences, give presentations that include visual and digital features and know how to use a wide range of words.

Year 10

Our Year 10 English classes are guided by the Australian Curriculum and embraces three learning strands; Language, Literature and Literacy. As students’ progress through the middle years’ students need to begin their preparation for their final years of school in the Senior School. This is a main priority of our Year 10 Cohort. To achieve this, we seek to build a strong literacy platform to support students in standardised testing, whilst creating a teaching and learning program that prepares them for the rigours of Year 11 and 12. Our mission is to provide each student with the opportunity to reach their potential in the English Learning Area.

Year 11 and 12

Our English Department strives to provide a range of appropriate English courses that cater to the needs of our students. The different courses are targeted at student ability to ensure that students are able to engage and immerse themselves into the English syllabus outlined by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority. The course assessment tasks aim to motivate and encourage students to develop a strong foundation of literacy in order to support students in achieving their chosen pathway as they move towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

The English Department also offers students a range of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) courses that link directly with students who are transitioning from our Intensive English Centre and into mainstream school. These courses provide students with the intensive language scaffolding that they need to support them for success in this learning area.
